Frequently asked questions

No lights on my display screen?

Your Smarttek display only turns on when water is flowing. If there’s no display with water running, check the basics:

  • Water inlet/outlet are connected correctly (inlet is closest to the battery box).
  • Remove and clean the mesh gauze inside the water inlet pipe.
  • Open the battery box, pull down the silver tabs, reseat batteries (rear battery + down, front battery − down).
  • Ensure the power switch is ON and set the water dial to MIN.
  • If using a pump, confirm your 12V source is supplying 12V or more.

Still blank? Test on mains water pressure to rule out low pressure. Then run the Battery Test and re-check water pressure.

My pump is shuddering on minimum water?
  • Remove/clean the mesh gauze in the Smarttek water inlet valve.
  • Disconnect hose ends and run water through the pump only to confirm flow.
  • Keep at least 2 metres of hose between the pump and the hot water unit.

Work by elimination to find any blockage in the system.

Water, power and gas seem to be working, but my system won’t stay lit?

This is commonly due to flat/damaged batteries or a triggered temperature sensor. The gas safety solenoid requires a constant 3V+ to stay open.

See the Battery Testing guide and the How to Set Your Temperature guide for setup and diagnostics.

I hear constant ticking when I turn the shower head on, but there’s no ignition/flame?

Constant ticking without ignition usually points to weak or flat batteries. The gas solenoid needs 3V+ to hold open. Replace/test the batteries and re-run the Battery Test.

My system keeps cutting out randomly?

Check what the display does when it cuts:

Lights stay ON: Water pressure is likely OK. Suspect batteries (gas solenoid power) or temperature cut-off. See Battery Test and Temperature Guide.

Lights go OFF: Likely inconsistent water pressure. Do the following:

  • Clean the mesh gauze inside the water inlet.
  • Check your pump for blockages.
  • Verify your 12V source is delivering over 12V to the pump.
  • If using a 4.3 LPM pump, set the water dial to MIN.
Unit works in Summer mode, but in Winter mode the temperature drops?

Summer mode ignites 2 burners; Winter uses 6 burners. First run the temperature setting test (How to Set Your Temperature). If it still cuts out only in Winter, set the gas dial to MIN briefly, then increase slowly — this can prevent the temperature cut-off sensor from tripping.

My pump is on but there’s no noise?
